Providing your Tax File Number (TFN) to your super fund

It’s not compulsory for you to provide your TFN to your super fund, however if you don’t you may pay more tax than you otherwise would and your super fund will be unable to accept any personal after-tax contributions for you.

If you or your employer provide your TFN to your super fund, you will benefit from the following advantages:

  • All types of contributions can be accepted into your super account including after-tax contributions you make yourself and contributions made by your spouse.
  • You will avoid paying additional tax of 31.5% on any employer contributions made into your super account.
  • No additional tax will be deducted if you start drawing down on superannuation benefits.
  • If you’ve provided your consent, we can conduct a free Super Search on your behalf using your TFN to help you find any super that you may have lost track of.

If you’ve provided your TFN to your employer, they are required to pass it onto your super fund within the later of 14 days or when they next make a super contribution for you.
